The European project is now sustained by coup

By Daniel HannanPoliticsLast updated: November 14th, 2011

Even the outward forms of democracy are being shed

What we have witnessed is a coup détat: bloodless and genteel, but a coup détat none the less. In Athens and in Rome, elected prime ministers have been toppled in favour of Eurocrats respectively a former Vice-President of the European Central Bank and a former European Commissioner. Both countries now have what are called national governments, though they have been put together for the sole purpose of implementing policies that would be rejected in a general election.

Italy and Greece are satrapies of Brussels, just as surely as Bosnia or Kosovo. In its Balkan protectorates, the EU overtly favours technocracy as the antidote to populism (ie, democracy). Left to themselves, the locals have a tendency to vote for parties that want ethnographic frontiers. The EU's solution is to rule through a series of appointed governors diplomats (and the odd retired politician) in Bosnia, generals in Kosovo.

Now, like many previous empires, the EU is applying lessons learned through colonial administration to its metropolitan core. Politicians who lean too closely to what their voters want are removed. I dont mean, of course, that the EU sent in agents provocateurs on a secret mission to destabilise the Italian and Greek regimes. Nor am I suggesting that Brussels was the sole factor in their downfall. Like Margaret Thatcher in 1990, Silvio Berlusconi and George Papandreou already faced strong domestic opposition; in all three cases, the EU simply gave the final shove.

If this sounds like fanciful, read Fraser Nelson in the current Spectator. Fraser reveals the meetings between bankers and federalist leaders who identified the Italian premier as an obstacle to holding the euro together, and quotes oficials boasting that were on our way to moving out Berlusconi. If this is a conspiracy, its what HG Wells called an open conspiracy.

The putsch is the logical culmination of the European scheme though many Euro-idealists remain blind to that logic. The EU has always been an anti-democratic project. Lacking popular support, rejected in referendum after referendum, it depends on a tight-knit group of functionaries in the Commission and in the member states. Now, in a crisis, the democratic appurtenances and fripperies are discarded. Technocrats in Brussels deal directly with technocrats in Rome and Athens. The people are cut out altogether.

Whats terrifying is that these technocrats caused the disaster in the first place. They decided that the survival of the euro mattered more than the prosperity of its constituent members; they presided over the rise in spending and debt; they deliberately overlooked the debt criteria when the euro was launched so as to admit Italy and Greece. Indeed the new Greek prime minister, Lucas Papademos, was running his countrys central bank at the time.

In appointing these two Euro-apparatchiks, our masters are signalling in the clearest possible way that nothing will change. Closer integration matters more to them than freedom, more than prosperity, more than the rule of law, more than representative government itself.

What is Islams Gulen movement?

Posted on May 25, 2011 source: BBC News World

Turkeys Gulen movement, which promotes service to the common good, may have grown into the worlds biggest Muslim network. Is it the modern face of Islam, or are there more sinister undercurrents?

Founder Fethullah Gulen: His motives have been questioned in the past

From Kenya to Kazakhstan, a new Islamic network is attracting millions of followers and billions of dollars.

Inspired by a little-known Turkish imam, the Gulen movement is linked to more than 1,000 schools in 130 countries as well as think tanks, newspapers, TV and radio stations, universities and even a bank.

This massive network is unlike anything else. It has no formal structure, no visible organisation and no official membership.

Its supporters say they simply work together, in a loosely affiliated alliance inspired by the message of charismatic preacher Fethullah Gulen, who promotes a tolerant Islam which emphasises altruism, hard work and education.

Turkish businessmen are attracted by what they see as his international outlook and pragmatic approach to issues like using credit.

In Turkey today, it is thought to have up to 10 million supporters. A recent study suggests many give between 5%-20% of their income to groups affiliated with the movement.

Supporters help fund its schools

Critics claim its aim is to gain power, to spread socially conservative Islamic attitudes on issues like marriage and alcohol around the globe, and to suppress any opposition.

In the past year, three of its most prominent critics have been jailed in Turkey, sparking claims that it has become a sinister controlling force in its native land.

Mr Gulens critics point to a video which surfaced in 1999, in which he seemed to tell his followers that they should deliberately attempt to infiltrate mainstream structures:

You must move within the arteries of the system, without anyone noticing your existence, until you reach all the power centres. You must wait until such time as you have got all the state power, until you have brought to your side all the power of the constitutional institution in Turkey.

The following year, Mr Gulen faced charges of trying to undermine Turkeys secular state.

He left for the United States, claiming the recording had been tampered with. He was later cleared in absentia of all charges.

Today, aged 70, Mr Gulen lives a reclusive life on a country estate in Pennsylvania.

He has urged his followers to build schools instead of mosques, and encourages interaction with people of other faiths through dialogue societies, including one in the UK.

Social mobility

The movements schools usually boast hi-tech facilities, and many students are on scholarships funded by Gulen-inspired businessmen.

Fatma Disli likes the balance between faith and career

Although the schools are secular, teachers are expected to act as role models. Smoking, drinking and divorce are frowned upon.

Fatma Disli first came across the movement which she prefers to call Hizmet (service in Turkish) at a school it founded to help students pass university admissions tests.

The people I met through Hizmet were really hard-working, virtuous people who were practising their religion, but at the same time had important jobs. I realised that its possible to be religious and to have a career.

Gulen supporters argue that the movement has also played a part in the growth of Turkeys economy by bolstering exports.

Serdarj Yesilyurt, from Turkeys Federation of Businessmen and Industrialists, says 95% of his members are Gulen supporters.

Mr Gulen put forward some international values which helped to bring down mental barriers about doing trade abroad, and helped people to think big.

The combination of philanthropy and business has been powerful, he says, with Gulen-inspired schools supporting and smoothing the way for Turkish businessmen in emerging markets like Africa and Central Asia.

Press freedom threat

However, a media group run by Gulen supporters, which includes newspapers, TV and radio stations and a news agency, has been criticised for being too close to the Islamic-rooted governing party.

There are claims that supporters of the movement dominate parts of the police and the judiciary.

Fellow journalists protest against the treatment of Nedim Sener and Ahmet Sik

Last year, a police chief who wrote a book on this subject was jailed. Earlier this year, two Turkish investigative journalists, Ahmet Sik and Nedim Sener, were arrested after investigating similar claims.

As Sik was arrested, he shouted: Whoever touches them burns! All three men are still in jail.

They were arrested in connection with an alleged plot by right-wing extremists, hardline secularists and army generals to overthrow the state.

Its illogical to think that Gulen followers would be involved [in arresting critics]

Cemal Usak

Press freedom campaigner Ferai Tinch says most journalists in Turkey believe that they too will suffer if they criticise the movement.

The imprisonment of journalists is the tip of the iceberg. Nobody dares to write directly against the Gulen movement, he says.

The movement insists it had nothing to do with the arrests.

Its illogical to think that Gulen followers would be involved [in arresting critics], says Cemal Usak, of the Gulen-linked Journalists and Writers Foundation.

That would do the biggest harm to the movement. They must be out of their minds to think such a thing.

The only point that both supporters and critics seem to agree on is that it wields huge power in Turkey and that its global expansion shows no sign of slowing.

Edward Stourton reported on the Gulen movement in Islam Inc on BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday May 24, repeated on Sunday 29 May at 1700 BST. Or listen via the BBC iPlayer.

Subject: army of academic hitmen and Theodorakis

Ifestos Panayiotis:

One need to think twice as regards the role of Theodorakis, the academicians and the think tanks. The cause of our problems maybe something else: The deficit of national independence. That is political issue, not an academic problem. Diagnosis of causes need to precede good remedies. Our problem is not the lack of good analysis. Our problem is the lack of national independence. We had plenty of analysis in the 1990s but evaporated and Greece was driven to shrinkage and eventually bankruptcy. The following story may explain some things: Few years ago I had an interesting conversation with an American colleague. We had a dinner together at Athens Hilton following a conference organized there. He is a most prominent and most brilliant scholar in international relations. They are about 15 scholars altogether worldwide (http://www.ifestosedu.gr/61bibliografia%20students.htm). I just note, here, what is commonly known about the wonderful jungle of political science and political science of international relations: The remaining so called academics living in hegemonic states: a) most of them serve soft power strategies of the their state, including Turkey today (publicly declared by FM Axmet Davutoglou) and b) in  secondary establishments destined mostly for foreigners some teach tasteless introductory stories not good even for children and or submit deconstructionist ideas to them (ethnomidenistes). Those living in weak-dependencies that is, weak states targeted by hegemonic strategies, have only one choice: To serve the strategies of the hegemonic states, e.g. the orgy on interventions of the post-cold war era, the violation of rule of law in the Aegean, the imposition of a fascist protectorate in Cyprus that would serve imperialism etc. Lets return to my American colleague (note he is descriptive not prescriptive!!, himself, in fact, opposes his countrys hegemonic overextension in Irak and elsewhere). My colleague informed me that he has my books on strategy in the bibliographical list he suggests to  his students. I looked at him and put him a simple question: In these books I analyze standard concepts on strategy, geopolitics, theoretical relevance of Thucydides and Clausewitz, etc. Why I went on, almost innocently, Americans are eligible to read this analysis (so far know, Chinese, Russians, British et al) but not the Greeks. Why here, in my own country, the same analysis, or even a softened one, is attacked vehemently by an army of academic hitmen murdering my academic positions by characterizing me with various epithets or even insulting me!.

He looked at me really surprised and indeed squashed me:

Reading your books I thought you are clever. Obviously you are not or you are pitifully uninformed. Uninformed as to what happens outside the circle of our wonderful theoretical concepts. If you are living in the United States you would had been a scholar like me or, alternatively, as most do, a soldier of the Pendagon. This is not what they do 99% of the so called academics in USA? There is a triangle, dear friend: 1. Approximately 3000 institutes related to the American government, 2. The Pentagon establishment of as we call it there The Company, and 3. The Universities. The so called academics work and live luxuriously by consciously or unconsciously  serving our strategic interests within this triangle. IR theory is done my Carr, Morgenthau, Gilpin, Waltz et al, not by them. Sometime we expedite them abroad. Now: Living in a weak state like Greece you must either be a critical constructivist* consciously or unconsciously serving the hegemonic claims of states like mine or be recruited in an institute financed by us or a transnational actor such as Soros who is also occasionally cooperating with our services. The one or the other way, living and working in Greece, Servia or Albania you are bound consciously or unconsciously to be so commissioned as to analyze and instruct your people the following: It is nationalistic to develop a deterrence strategy or even to claim that you have national interests. National interest do have only the hegemonic states:  Weak states should not have national interests and that is how your people should learn to think. Either you propagate this or you shut up. Didnt you read Edward H. Carr or Kenneth Waltz? Understand it dear colleague: I am descriptive not prescriptive: Independent states, especially the hegemonic and their allies, should have a preemptive aggressive strategy. Non-independent states or states which are targeted with the purpose to diminish their national independence ,should be so driven as not to have a deterrence or any other defensive strategy. They must be flexible and adaptable to our hegemonic interests. To be a scholar in Greece or in any other dependency is an illusion!!. This state of affairs changes only if Greece politically speaking becomes an independent state. Nor nominally. In reality independent. If you insist to behave scholarly in Greece you are condemned to me murdered by our academic or media hitmen consciously or unconsciously commissioned by our government worldwide in the context of our soft power strategy. Wake up!! I repeat I am descriptive not prescriptive: Didnt you read about soft power strategy**. It is 90% of the strategic planning of hegemonic states. I regret when I see people like you not being conscious that the problem is political, not academic. After all you have Thucydides that provides a global and formidably true explanation and interpretation!! Why not everybody reads it here in Athens!!. Wake up dear friend.

Some few words following the smashing truths of my American colleague: In the 1990s many of us wrote tenths of standard essays or books regarding Greek Affairs in international affairs. I bypass all and refer only to Panayiotis Kondylis, who is maybe the top thinker of modern times. Though living in Germany, before his death, his books were translated in Greek (http://www.ifestosedu.gr/44Kondylis.htm and http://www.ifestosedu.gr/44%20Kondylis%20collection%20of%20elektronic%20texts.htm). Definitely, comparatively and scientifically speaking, his political thinking is by far much more advanced compared to any scholar in western states. Also take Axmet Davutoglous  Strategic Depth: In terms of IR analysis if compared to the description and interpretation of Kondylis, objectively speaking, Strategic depth is a kindergarten. Still, Kondylis when his analysis became known widely in mid 1990s, he was by all means murdered intellectually. He was attacked by a ferocious army of academics and or mediamen who readily attack everyone who dares to speak about rule of law, deterrence strategy, exercise of sovereign rights etc (Turkey yes has the right, Greece not, read Sunday newspapers tomorrow, most probably you shall discover tenths of comments or articles).

Personally it happens I am convinced none or very few are fully conscious of what is at stake or what their role really is. Worldwide, within universities, within think-tanks or in media, at issue are not the personal intentions but the political state of affairs and the role of political analysis as structured in contemporary international politics. People are often performing their role instrumentally, are trapped professionally and their welfare depends upon compromises, their  wellbeing and that of their families depends from their role and many other act fully unconscious because simply they lack political thinking.  Some other may turn against their country in order to revenge their father or teacher (so far, insisted a specialist in psychiatry in conversation lately). In life, moreover, most persons cannot act as heroes. Shifts of positions and alliances  is the rule not the exception: Where are all these millions of communists thinkers? Answer: Mostly analyzing in line with American driven  postmodernism.

I could predict the following: If the United States change position about AOZ and energy resources in the Mediterranean basin most intellectuals in our area (even some Turks or some related to Turks but under the new circumstances bound to be geared to turn against Turkey) shall forget what is currently written and enthusiastically support Greek positions (So far I do not know whether such a change is about to come , but this is irrelevant. If stronger states shift positions and given the pitiful state of our affairs, we may have others supporting our interests because it is in their interests). Many in intellectual kindergartens are moreover ignorant or indifferent as to what happens beyond the topic they serve as analyze. We all know that political and social sciences is not a science proper. It is at least 1000 pieces analyzing separately and irrespective of the global picture. Political analysts, after all, are humans and have the idiosyncrasies of all other human groups. What matters is to understand reality, that is, the causes and deficiencies in social life and international politics, and most importantly, of national independence deep inside our politics and our spiritual circumstances. Last but not least, what is really an utterly pitiful and regrettable state of affairs in a weak states is if and when the taxpayers do pay for intellectuals who not only are not scholarly gifted but in addition are consciously or unconsciously serving hegemonic claims and occasionally the countrys enemies.

Conclusion: At issue is not whether Theodorakis or another good patriot commits money for think tanks or even university departments. As in any other weak state structured politically to be depended, these tanks would either be emptied preemptively, or killed by hitmen or alternatively be filled by hidden reserves readily and well trained in propaganda. The problem of weak states is national independence. And national independence is a political issue not an academic issue. Academicians should, at least, stay scholars. Hoping that I am wrong, I have to be honest and say my opinion: In countries like Greece you cannot be an genuine scholar. I know that by so speaking, some are unhappy and some other smile diabolically. I do not envy the latter!!!, if any

Good theory of life tells this: If politically a state is geared in support of national independence most intellectuals shall serve this purpose. And irrespective in which country we live struggling for national independence is universally moral. This is so because it is compatible to the ontological premises and because it is validated by the High principles of international law (non intervention, interstate parity, internal and external sovereignty). I did not say rules of international law. I wrote principles of international law that are governed by another condition: self-help. This is another story and I better stop it here.

Notes

* : More powerful states may be in position to alter the conceptions that the weaker actors have of their own self interests, especially when economic and military power has delegitimated ideological convictions in weaker or defeated societies. The United States, for instance, pressed for a particular vision of the international society should be ordered after World War II and renewed and reinvigorated this project after the en of the Cold War. The goal was not simply to promote a particular set of objectives, but to alter how other societies conceived of their own goals. The emphasis on what Nye has called soft power engages both realist concerns about relative capabilities and constructivisms focus on beliefs and identity. [Katzenstein/Keohane/Krasner , International Organization, vol. 52. 4 1998 p. 673]

** The interested about soft-power could read the short but extremely informative essay of Jonathan Mowat: http://www.ifestosedu.gr/47SoftPower.htm. It is important to follow the bibliographical links of this essay.
